The story so far
What we know about Hela: Of Mice & Magic
Hela: of Mice & Magic is a 3D open-world adventure in which you play a small mouse. The mouse is one of the familiars of a kind witch who has long looked after a forest and the creatures living in it. According to the official description, the world is slipping out of harmony and the witch is growing ill, so her smallest helpers have to leave home and take over the work she can no longer do.
The game is built around care and kindness rather than combat. You gather ingredients, brew potions, solve physics-based environmental puzzles and help animals and communities across a landscape inspired by Northern Sweden, with forests, lakes and misty wetlands. It can be played alone, in local split-screen or in online co-op for up to four players. Solo players get a Shade system, which creates magical copies of the mouse to help with puzzles that would normally need a partner.
Hela is the debut game from Windup Games, a Swedish studio founded by people who worked on the Unravel series, and it is published by Knights Peak, a label of MY.GAMES. It was shown under a different working title at gamescom 2025, where it was named Most Wholesome and Most Entertaining game. The final name was revealed in April 2026, and in September 2026 a narrative trailer arrived together with the release date of 1 December 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC.
What to expect from Hela: Of Mice & Magic
Based on what the developer and publisher have shown so far.
- 01
A kindness-driven adventure
The official pitch centres on helping others and restoring harmony to the land, not on fighting. So far, the game is described as non-violent and focused on small acts of care.
- 02
Physics-based puzzles
Puzzles are said to have more than one solution and to reward experimenting with physics, potions and the environment. According to the developer, the world reacts to what the player does.
- 03
Co-op for up to four
You can play solo, in local split-screen or online with friends. Solo players get the Shade system, which creates magical echoes of the mouse that stand in for a second player.
- 04
Traversal and animal friends
The official page lists grappling, gliding and riding animals as ways to move around. Befriending animals is described as a way to unlock new traversal abilities and reach new areas.
