The story so far

What we know about Metro 2039

Metro 2039 is the next mainline entry in the Metro series, developed by 4A Games and published by Deep Silver. It is a story-driven first-person shooter set in Moscow in the year 2039, built around exploration, survival, combat and stealth, and it is single-player only. It was announced on 16 April 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, with a first reveal that mixed a trailer and gameplay footage.

You play the Stranger, a fully voiced protagonist who replaces the silent Artyom of earlier games. He is a former Metro resident who was pushed out into exile and is dragged back into the tunnels, haunted by nightmares. There he runs into the Novoreich, a fascist regime that has united the underground settlements under a single leader. The trailers show a mix of stealth and open combat, from daily life at Sevastopolskaya station to the irradiated surface of Moscow. The Dark Ones, shadowy creatures from the series' early days, return as well.

The game is inspired by Dmitry Glukhovsky's Metro novels and runs on 4A's own engine, which Deep Silver describes as the first in the series built from the ground up for ray tracing. 4A, a studio with a Ukrainian core, has said the full-scale invasion of Ukraine shaped the story. The release date of 4 February 2027 was confirmed at a State of Play in September 2026. A Collector's Edition with a wearable replica Spartan helmet is planned, and pre-orders are due later in 2026.

What to expect from Metro 2039

Based on what the developer and publisher have shown so far.

  • 01

    A story-driven single-player campaign

According to the developer, Metro 2039 is a single-player first-person shooter with a claustrophobic atmosphere and elements of psychological horror, following the Stranger as he returns to the Moscow tunnels.

  • 02

    Stealth or open combat

The Renegade gameplay trailer shows the Stranger mixing stealth with all-out fighting to get through Novoreich-held areas. So far, the footage includes human enemies, mutants and the series' improvised weapons.

  • 03

Hand-crafted places, from station to surface

Deep Silver says the world ranges from everyday life in Sevastopolskaya station to the deadly irradiated surface of Moscow, with detailed, hand-built environments rather than a procedural map.

  • 04

Ray tracing built into the engine

The 4A Engine is described as built from the ground up for ray tracing. At launch, PS5, PS5 Pro and Xbox Series X get a 60 FPS Performance Mode with ray tracing, according to Deep Silver.
