The story so far

What we know about Trees Hate You

Trees Hate You is a single-player comedy adventure and rage game made by a solo developer who works under the name Tykenn. After a picnic in the woods, the player character just wants to walk home, but the surrounding trees keep setting traps to throw him off course and kill him. The game has been described as an unfair, Mario-style platformer built around paranoia: nothing in the forest can be trusted.

The project began as a free demo on itch.io and spread through YouTube playthroughs. On 12 December 2025 the developer announced that an expanded version was coming to Steam, and a Steam page went up with a wishlist button. A bigger demo followed in February 2026 with new traps and a character creation menu. Tykenn is listed as both developer and publisher.

At the Future Games Show at gamescom 2026, a new trailer revealed that the full game launches on PC on 16 November 2026. According to the Steam page, the final game has several biomes, a hat collection to unlock and an axe to find. No console versions have been announced so far.

What to expect from Trees Hate You

Based on what the developer and publisher have shown so far.

  • 01

    Traps and gags

The Steam page describes a rage game built on traps and gags, with a surprise around every corner. You avoid what you can, die to the rest, and try again.

  • 02

    More than one forest

The demo only has the forest. The full game is reported to add other biomes, including a beach, a desert and a snowy area, each with its own tricks.

  • 03

    Hats and customisation

Players can collect hats and change how their character looks. The expanded demo already added a character creation menu, so some of this can be tried before launch.

  • 04

    A goal worth chasing

The store text hints that you are looking for an axe, which suggests the trees may not get the last word. How the game ends has not been shown.
