The story so far
What we know about Tropico 7
Tropico 7 is the next entry in the long-running Tropico series of satirical city-building and political strategy games. The player takes the role of El Presidente, the ruler of a Caribbean-style island nation, and has to balance construction, a working economy, citizen needs and the demands of rival factions while holding on to power, whether by charm, diplomacy or force.
The game is developed by Gaming Minds Studios and published by Kalypso Media. It was announced at Gamescom in August 2025, more than six years after Tropico 6. According to the studio, the biggest additions are terraforming, which lets players raise and lower land, create beaches and even build new islands, a revamped council in which faction leaders meet El Presidente face to face, and a reworked military system with direct control over units.
The campaign consists of five maps and follows a new antagonist, Victoria Guerra, with the eras of the series running from the colonial period to modern times. On top of that come 10 extra scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps and a random map generator. A closed beta with a limited number of players ran on PC in spring 2026. Kalypso set the release date for 28 January 2027 in August 2026 and later added a Switch 2 version, made together with Engine Software, to the launch lineup. The Steam page lists the game as single-player only. The first gameplay trailer focused on terraforming and the new political tools, and the game is meant to keep the humorous tone of the series.
What to expect from Tropico 7
Based on what the developer and publisher have shown so far.
- 01
Terraforming
Players can reshape the island itself, according to the developer: raise or remove land, create beaches and parks, redirect rivers and even make entirely new islands, so the map is no longer a fixed starting point.
- 02
A council with faces
Faction leaders now sit in a revamped council and meet El Presidente directly. They can be negotiated with, manipulated or ignored, which should make the political side of ruling more personal.
- 03
Direct military control
The military system has been reworked so players can command units directly against rebels and foreign forces, instead of relying only on indirect orders as in earlier games, so far as shown.
- 04
Lots to play
The Steam page lists five campaign maps, 10 additional scenarios, more than 20 sandbox maps and a random map generator, plus customisation of the palace and El Presidente's look.
