The story so far

What we know about Armatus

Armatus is a third-person roguelite shooter from Counterplay Games, the studio behind Godfall, and publisher Fictions. It is set in the demon-infested ruins of Paris, where the world has collapsed and the last survivors shelter behind holy wards. The player takes the role of the last supernatural warrior of an ancient order.

The goal is to search the broken city for the Sunless Gate, described as a lost gateway to heaven. According to the developer, the game blends modern firearms, supernatural powers and a little melee, with an arsenal that includes SMGs and shotguns and abilities such as holy fire and time manipulation. Each run offers different build choices.

The structure follows the roguelite pattern the studio sums up as fight, die, repeat, with progression carried between attempts. Armatus was announced on 20 November 2025, had a limited PC demo during Steam Next Fest in February 2026 and returned at the PC Gaming Show in June 2026. A release date trailer in August 2026 set the launch for 7 January 2027 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2 and PC, with Game Pass support. Pricing has not been announced in the sources reviewed.

What to expect from Armatus

Based on what the developer and publisher have shown so far.

  • 01

    Guns plus celestial powers

Combat mixes modern firearms such as SMGs and shotguns with supernatural abilities like holy fire and time manipulation, and a bit of melee, according to the developer.

  • 02

    A new build every run

The studio promises dynamic build choices for each run, with abilities and passive upgrades shaping how you fight, in the fight-die-repeat roguelite loop.

  • 03

    Progress that carries over

Dying is part of the design. So far the game is described as keeping progression between attempts, so each failed run should still move you forward.

  • 04

    Boss encounters in ruined Paris

The February 2026 PC demo ended with a large demon boss called The Monument, which hints at big set-piece fights inside the ruined city.
