Game Avant

Review

Shift at Midnight

A first-person horror game in which you work a night shift and decide who gets let in. Some of the customers are not human, so you question them and check their papers, and a mistake means boarding up and defending yourself. You can play alone or in online co-op with a small group of friends. Is it your kind of game?

Game Avant verdict

A fresh, tense and funny co-op horror built on suspicion rather than jump scares. The shop-keeping and ID-checking loop is excellent with friends, while the shooting and stealth parts and the limited content keep it from the top tier.

The thing you'll love. Or hate.

Suspicion over action

You may love it because

The best moments come from reading a customer, checking details and deciding whether to trust them, which makes every call feel meaningful.

It may frustrate you because

When a mistake leads to a fight, the shooting and stealth sections are looser and less satisfying than the detective work that came before.

Co-op chaos

You may love it because

Three players with proximity voice chat create loud, funny and tense stories that no script could plan.

It may frustrate you because

The game is clearly designed for company, so solo runs lose much of the charm and some of the pressure.

Small and cheap

You may love it because

A solo-developed indie at a low price delivers a strong idea and a lot of personality for little money.

It may frustrate you because

The content is limited, and players who want long-term variety may run out of new things sooner than they would in a bigger game.
