Review

Far Far West

A first-person co-op shooter set in a Western world full of monsters and robots. A team of up to four takes on missions, collects bounties and loot, and tries to extract alive. The tone is chaotic and humorous, and it can also be played solo. Is it your kind of game?

Game Avant verdict

A lean, confident Early Access debut that turns bounty-hunting into a co-op ritual, even though large parts of what a finished Far Far West will become are still unwritten.

More about Far Far West

Far Far West is not trying to be everything at once on day one of Early Access, and that specific restraint is the single most reassuring thing about an otherwise small, unproven project. It is a first-person, online co-op PvE extraction shooter set in a Western world carrying a genuine supernatural edge rather than treating that element as surface decoration, built by Evil Raptor, a French independent studio founded in 2020 and made up of only eight people total, and published by Fireshine Games. It entered Steam Early Access on 28 April 2026 for PC, and in the months since launch it has accumulated more than 3,000 positive Steam reviews and settled into an "Overwhelmingly Positive" rating, a genuinely rare outcome for an eight-person team's Early Access debut in a genre typically dominated by studios with ten or twenty times that headcount. None of that reception makes Far Far West a finished game, and it would be dishonest to review it as though it were one. What it actually is, right now, is a small studio's confident and clearly scoped first attempt at a genre that usually demands far more production resources than eight people can realistically provide, and it is worth being aware of specifically because of how clearly it already knows what it wants to become, rather than feeling like a loose collection of systems searching for an identity. The core premise is stated plainly by the people building it: teams of up to four players take on contracts to track down dangerous bounty targets, eliminate them, and extract the reward safely. That loop is simple enough to explain in a single sentence and open-ended enough to support years of additional content without ever needing to be fundamentally reinvented, which is precisely the kind of foundation a small team can realistically keep expanding without overextending itself. The supernatural layer woven into the Western setting gives Evil Raptor room to introduce enemy types, environmental hazards, and mission variety well beyond what a straightforward historical bounty-hunting game could support, without abandoning the genre's core fantasy of tracking a target across hostile, open terrain with a small, trusted team. Co-op coordination matters directly to how a given hunt actually plays out, rather than existing as an optional multiplayer mode bolted onto a fundamentally single-player design, and the extraction structure means every successful job carries real tension right up until the moment a team actually escapes with their target secured. What genuinely limits this review, and should limit expectations accordingly, is how much of what a finished Far Far West will eventually become remains entirely unwritten. Content depth, long-term progression systems, and the full scope of supernatural threats the team plans to introduce are all things only time and continued development will answer, and a studio this small inevitably faces real constraints on how quickly it can deliver on an ambitious roadmap. Judged purely on what exists today, though, this is a lean, confident Early Access debut that turns bounty-hunting into something closer to a cooperative ritual between trusted teammates, and that foundation alone makes it worth joining well before the game reaches its eventual 1.0 release.

The thing you'll love. Or hate.

Early Access, not a finished game

You may love it because

Buying in now means shaping the bounty hunt while Evil Raptor is still building it, and testing new content as it lands.

It may frustrate you because

The build available since April 28, 2026 is a foundation rather than the finished vision, and content gaps come with that territory.

A Western setting with a supernatural twist

You may love it because

Mixing bounty-hunting with horror gives every job a layer of unpredictability a straight Western shooter would not have.

It may frustrate you because

Players who came only for the Western fantasy may find the supernatural turn pulls the tone somewhere they did not sign up for.
