Strategy has found a better home on PlayStation 5 than it ever had on earlier consoles, thanks to controller-friendly ports of PC classics and a run of tactics games built with a pad in mind. The DualSense and fast SSD suit both slow turn-based thinking and real-time base building. These are the strongest strategy and tactics games you can play on PS5, from grand empires to tight squad-based battles.

1. Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles#

Square Enix brought Yasumi Matsuno's 1997 tactical classic to PS5 on 30 September 2025. Players choose between an enhanced version with full voice acting and rebalanced systems, and a classic version that keeps the original feel. The job system, class-driven squad building and a political story about betrayal and war still feel brilliant on a grid. Story and battles are dense and the difficulty can spike sharply, so newcomers to the genre should expect some frustration. It is the most important tactics game of its era, finally playable on modern hardware.

2. Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun#

Mimimi's real-time tactics game sends five specialists through guarded fortresses in Edo-period Japan. You pause, queue actions and time takedowns so they land together, which makes every successful infiltration feel like a small heist. Each character has a distinct toolset, levels allow many solutions and the campaign keeps introducing new ideas. The PS5 version arrived in October 2025 and suits controllers well. It demands constant quicksaving and patience, and failure means replaying a section, so anyone who dislikes trial and error should look elsewhere.

3. Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition#

Forgotten Empires' remaster of the 1999 real-time classic reached PS5 on 5 June 2025. You gather resources, age up through the medieval eras and fight with a huge roster of civilizations, each with its own units. The campaigns are educational and the skirmish and online modes have very high replay value. A well-designed controller scheme works, but it cannot match the speed of a mouse and keyboard when fights get frantic. It remains the benchmark RTS for console newcomers and veterans alike.

4. Unicorn Overlord#

Vanillaware and Atlus released this tactical RPG on 8 March 2024. You command squads on a fantasy continent, arranging units on a grid and setting simple conditional orders that play out automatically in real time. The systems are deep but easy to learn, the hand-painted art is gorgeous and the overworld invites exploration as you liberate territory. The story is a familiar rebellion tale and some characters are thinly drawn. Anyone who wants a large, polished fantasy campaign with smart squad building should start here.

5. Age of Mythology: Retold#

World's Edge and Forgotten Empires rebuilt the 2002 classic, releasing it on PS5 on 4 March 2025. Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Atlantean gods give each civilization its own units, myth creatures and god powers. The remake modernizes the visuals and campaign while staying true to the faster, more chaotic fantasy flavor of the original. Controller play works for campaign and casual skirmish, but competitive players will miss mouse precision. It is a colorful, approachable RTS that rewards experimenting with the different pantheons.

6. Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew#

Mimimi's final game, released on 17 August 2023, swaps samurai for pirates. You lead a crew of undead buccaneers across a supernatural Caribbean, each with their own powers, and plan stealth infiltrations using the same pause and command approach as Shadow Tactics. Its hubs are larger, the crew is more varied and players can mix characters in many ways. Missions can run long, and the ship-based structure gives a few levels a slower pace. It is the clearest pick for players who finished Shadow Tactics and want more.

7. Crusader Kings III#

Paradox's grand strategy game came to PS5 on 29 March 2022, with an interface rebuilt by Lab42 for controllers. You play a medieval dynasty rather than a nation, scheming, marrying and betraying across generations. The character-driven stories it produces are unmatched, and the console version is more readable than expected. It is still a dense simulation with many menus and a steep learning curve, and the early hours can overwhelm newcomers. For patient players it offers endless emergent drama.

8. Marvel's Midnight Suns#

Firaxis, the studio behind XCOM and Civilization, released this tactical RPG on 2 December 2022. Combat uses a hand of cards instead of fixed abilities, letting heroes such as Iron Man, Blade and Captain Marvel throw enemies around the environment. Between missions you manage the Abbey, build relationships and customize your own hero, the Hunter. The combat is inventive and rewarding. The Abbey sections are slow, and randomness in card draws can be frustrating. It suits fans of Marvel who want something more thoughtful than an action game.

9. Tactics Ogre: Reborn#

Square Enix and Quest remade Yasumi Matsuno's 1995 tactical RPG and released it on PS5 on 11 November 2022. The branching story of a civil war asks morally difficult choices, and the modernized combat adds a new class system, level cap removal and fully voiced cutscenes. Hitoshi Sakimoto's re-recorded music is excellent. The pacing is slow, the grid battles are demanding and some sections rely on grinding. Those who love narrative-heavy tactics games will find a great deal to enjoy here.

10. SteamWorld Heist II#

Image & Form's sequel reached PS5 on 8 August 2024. The series' ricochet aiming returns, now with a job system that lets your steambot crew swap classes, plus real-time naval exploration between turn-based missions. Bouncing a shot off a wall to hit an enemy in the head stays satisfying, and the humor and art style are charming. The overworld sailing is less exciting than the tactics and the difficulty is gentle for veterans. It is a friendly entry point for players new to turn-based tactics.

11. Anno 1800#

Ubisoft Blue Byte's city builder reached PS5 in a console edition on 16 March 2023. You build an Industrial Revolution empire, managing supply chains between citizens, trade and colonies across islands. The redesigned interface uses radial menus and works well with a controller. The production chains are deep and absorbing, and the sense of steadily growing a city is very rewarding. Early hours are slow and complicated, and warfare is an afterthought. It is perfect for players who love optimizing and planning more than fighting.

12. Age of Wonders 4#

Triumph Studios released this fantasy 4X game on 2 May 2023 for PS5, PC and Xbox Series. You build a ruler from a mix of race, culture and magic tradition, then expand an empire and fight tactical turn-based battles on a separate map. The customization lets every campaign feel unique and the tactical combat is a high point. Late-game turns can drag, and the AI is not always good at pressing advantages. For fans of fantasy empire building it is among the best available on console.

13. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess#

Capcom's action-strategy hybrid launched on 19 July 2024. By day you position villagers and upgrade defenses, by night you fight waves of demons as a bodyguard escorting a shrine maiden up a mountain. It mixes tower defense with real-time action, wrapped in striking Japanese folklore art. The loop is fresh and compact, though repeated stages and a limited variety of enemies can grow tiresome. It is an unusual, stylish alternative for those who want strategy with more action than usual.

14. Songs of Conquest#

Lavapotion's heroes-and-armies strategy game, inspired by Heroes of Might and Magic, arrived on PS5 on 12 November 2024. You roam a map with a hero, capture resources and then fight turn-based battles on hex-like fields, all in beautiful pixel art. Four factions play very differently, and the campaign is well suited for shorter sessions. There is less variety than in the genre's giants, and some balance issues remain. For anyone missing classic fantasy strategy it is a warm, well-crafted return.

15. Warhammer 40,000: Chaos Gate - Daemonhunters#

Complex Games' turn-based tactics game reached PS5 on 20 February 2024. You lead Grey Knights against Chaos while managing a strike cruiser, research and soldier recovery between missions, in the same mold as XCOM. Combat is heavy, brutal and close to Warhammer's tone, and it rewards aggressive play. Repetitive mission structure and a few balance rough edges hold it back. Fans of Games Workshop's setting who want an XCOM-like will feel right at home.

16. Against the Storm#

Eremite Games' roguelite city builder reached PS5 on 26 June 2025. You guide a colony of different species through a hostile wilderness, meeting the Queen's demands before the rain destroys the settlement. Each run is short, the resource chains are clever and the dark fantasy atmosphere is distinctive. Its menus and numbers are dense, and the tutorial only scratches the surface, so beginners may struggle. It is addictive for fans of city builders who like a fresh challenge every few hours.
