The PS5 has become a natural home for fantasy, pairing fast SSD loading with the power to render dragons, ruined kingdoms and sprawling open worlds in detail. The library ranges from vast role-playing epics and brutal action adventures to stylish indie tales, so whether you want swordplay, spellcraft or a story to get lost in, there is a world ready to explore.

1. Baldur's Gate III#

Larian Studios released Baldur's Gate III on PS5 in September 2023, a few weeks after the PC launch, and it is the most complete take on Dungeons & Dragons in a video game. Turn-based combat, deep character building and choices that genuinely change the story make it a benchmark for the genre. Every companion feels written with care, and the freedom to solve problems by talking, sneaking or casting spells is unmatched. The downside is sheer size: a full playthrough takes well over 70 hours, and the rules can overwhelm anyone new to tactical role-playing games.

2. Elden Ring#

FromSoftware and author George R. R. Martin built the Lands Between for Elden Ring, released in February 2022 and played on PS5 with fast loading and smooth performance. It is an open-world fantasy where gods, demigods and grotesque bosses wait behind every ridge, and exploration is rewarded more than anything else. Combat is demanding but flexible, with spirit summons and magic offering easier paths. Its story is told in fragments and item descriptions, which some players find cryptic. Anyone who dislikes steep difficulty spikes should look elsewhere, but for everyone else it is a landmark.

3. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt#

CD Projekt Red's The Witcher 3 launched in 2015 and arrived in an upgraded PS5 version in December 2022. You play the monster hunter Geralt, searching for his adopted daughter across war-torn kingdoms full of folklore and moral grey zones. Its side quests are often better than the main stories of other games, and the Blood and Wine expansion is a full adventure of its own. Combat and inventory menus feel dated next to newer action role-playing games, and the horse controls can frustrate. The writing still stands out as a high point for the medium.

4. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33#

Sandfall Interactive released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in April 2025, a turn-based role-playing game set in a Belle Époque-inspired fantasy world where a Paintress erases everyone of a certain age each year. Real-time dodging and parrying turn combat into an active, tense affair, and the art direction and orchestral score are striking. The story takes emotional risks that pay off. Its exploration is more linear than open-world fans might expect, and a few late-game systems get complicated. Even so, it is one of the most accomplished role-playing games of recent years.

5. God of War Ragnarök#

Santa Monica Studio released God of War Ragnarök in November 2022 as the conclusion to Kratos and Atreus's Norse saga, and it runs on both PS4 and PS5. It visits all nine realms, with weighty axe and blade combat that remains deeply satisfying, and strong performances sell the father-son drama. The PS5 version loads quickly and looks superb. The puzzles repeat, and the story leans heavily on the previous game, so newcomers should play 2018's God of War first. For a cinematic fantasy action adventure with mythological scale, few games match it.

6. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth#

Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Rebirth in February 2024, a PS5 exclusive at launch and the second part of its remake trilogy. It expands the original's world journey into large open regions filled with activities, including the card game Queen's Blood, and the party's hybrid real-time and tactical combat is excellent. Its cast has never looked or sounded better. The open areas lean on repetitive map-clearing tasks, and the story becomes hard to follow without the earlier game. As a big-budget Japanese role-playing game, it is hard to beat.

7. Metaphor: ReFantazio#

Atlus and Studio Zero released Metaphor: ReFantazio in October 2024, a new fantasy world from the team behind Persona. A kingdom without a king, prejudice between tribes and a tournament to decide the throne drive the plot, while the Archetype job system and turn-based combat are deep and fast. The stylish interface and soundtrack fit the tone. Its calendar-driven structure of bonds, training and travel is demanding, and the pace starts slow. It suits fans of Persona looking for something darker and more political, rather than players after an open-world adventure.

8. Hades#

Supergiant Games released Hades on PS5 in August 2021, after its 2020 debut on PC and Switch. You fight your way out of the Greek underworld as Zagreus, son of Hades, and each failed escape attempt advances the story through relationships with gods and shades. The roguelike structure feels fresh on every run thanks to boon combinations, and the hand-painted art and voice acting are outstanding. It is not a long open-world epic, and players who dislike repeating runs may tire of the loop. As a compact fantasy action game, it is superb.

9. Demon's Souls#

Bluepoint Games rebuilt FromSoftware's 2009 classic for PS5's launch in November 2020, and it remains a showcase for the hardware, with dark castles, swamps and mines rendered in fine detail. Deliberate, punishing combat and a grim medieval world of Boletaria make victories feel earned, and the fast loading removes old friction. It is a remake rather than a reimagining, so its hub-and-level structure feels tighter and more limited than later games from the studio. Beginners may struggle, but fans of dark fantasy will find a superb, atmospheric game.

10. Black Myth: Wukong#

Game Science released Black Myth: Wukong in August 2024, an action role-playing game based on the Chinese classic Journey to the West. You play a Destined One with a staff, transformations and spells, facing a parade of imaginative bosses through beautifully realised landscapes. Combat rewards patience and mastery of dodging. The story assumes familiarity with the source material, and the level design is linear with some uneven pacing and difficulty spikes. Even so, it offers a striking, distinctive take on mythic fantasy, and the boss encounters are among the most memorable on the platform.

11. Final Fantasy XVI#

Square Enix's Final Fantasy XVI, produced by Naoki Yoshida, launched in June 2023 as a PS5 exclusive. It follows Clive Rosfield in the war-torn realm of Valisthea, where giant Eikons clash in spectacular summon battles. Fast, stylish action combat replaces the series' traditional turn-based system, and the tone is darker and more mature than usual. The side quests are thin and the combat is less tactical than some fans want, while the open-world elements are limited. Still, it is an impressive, cinematic spectacle with a memorable soundtrack.

12. Kena: Bridge of Spirits#

Ember Lab released Kena: Bridge of Spirits in September 2021, including on PS5, and the animation studio's debut looks like an interactive animated film. You guide a young spirit guide through a forest village, healing lost souls and commanding cute creatures called Rot. Combat and puzzles are accessible and pleasant, and the emotional story is sincere. The boss fights can be a spike in difficulty, and the world is fairly small and linear. It is a good fit for players who want a short, warm fantasy adventure instead of a huge time commitment.

13. Sea of Stars#

Sabotage Studio released Sea of Stars in August 2023 as a love letter to classic 16-bit role-playing games like Chrono Trigger. Two children of the solstice explore a colorful pixel-art world with a timed-hit turn-based combat system that keeps every fight engaged. The soundtrack by Yasunori Mitsuda is superb. Exploration is gentle rather than punishing, and some players will find the difficulty too forgiving. The story is also more traditional than surprising. For anyone who misses old-school Japanese role-playing games, it is a charming and polished tribute.

14. Hogwarts Legacy#

Avalanche Software released Hogwarts Legacy in February 2023, an open-world action role-playing game set in the wizarding world in the 1800s. You attend the school as a fifth-year student, casting spells, brewing potions and exploring the castle and Forbidden Forest. The spellcasting feels fluid, and the castle is a joy to wander. Its open-world activities are repetitive, and some of the side content is padded. There is also controversy around the franchise's author, which some players wish to consider. Still, it lets fans live out a long-held dream.

15. Final Fantasy VII Remake#

Square Enix released Final Fantasy VII Remake in April 2020 on PS4, and the Intergrade edition followed on PS5 in June 2021, adding sharper visuals and the Yuffie episode. It rebuilds the Midgar section of the 1997 classic into a full game, with an action-based combat system that still lets you pause and issue commands. Characters and music shine. Its corridors are linear and filler chapters can drag, and the story diverges from the original in ways that may surprise fans. As an introduction to Final Fantasy, it is strong.

16. Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess#

Capcom released Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess in July 2024, a fantasy strategy action game rooted in Japanese folklore. By day you prepare villagers and defenses, and by night you protect a maiden as she purifies a mountain of demonic corruption. The ink-wash-inspired art and the mix of swordplay with tower defense give it a unique identity. Missions repeat and the later stretch can feel grindy. It is a fine choice for anyone looking for something different from the usual open-world fantasy, especially with its smaller scope.
