The best RPG games on Xbox, from Western epics to Japanese classics, on both Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Ten of the 14 picks below also run on Xbox One, and four are Series X|S only (Baldur's Gate III, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Black Myth: Wukong); each entry says which. Open-world adventures, deep party-based tactics and punishing action RPGs all sit comfortably here, and many run with fast loading and steady frame rates on Series X|S.

1. Baldur's Gate III#

Larian Studios released Baldur's Gate III on PC in August 2023 and on Xbox Series X|S in December of the same year. It is a Dungeons & Dragons role-playing game where almost every conversation, skill check and combat encounter can be solved in several ways, and your companions react to what you do. Turn-based combat rewards planning, and the voice acting and writing are exceptional. It is enormous, so newcomers to D&D rules can feel overwhelmed at first, and it is not available on Xbox One.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt#

CD Projekt Red launched The Witcher 3 in May 2015, and it still sets the standard for open-world storytelling. You play the monster hunter Geralt of Rivia, tracking a missing ward across war-torn kingdoms, and even minor side quests carry real moral weight. The Blood and Wine expansion in 2016 alone offers a full adventure, and a next-generation update brought it to Series X|S. Combat is functional rather than refined, and the inventory and menus feel clumsy, but the writing and world more than compensate.

3. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33#

Sandfall Interactive released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in April 2025 on Series X|S. It is a turn-based role-playing game with real-time dodging, parrying and aimed attacks, set in a painterly, Belle Epoque-inspired world where a Paintress erases everyone of a certain age each year. The music and art direction are remarkable, and combat feels active rather than menu-bound. Exploration is more guided than in the open-world giants on this list, and some players find the late-game story divisive. It is Series X|S only.

4. Persona 5 Royal#

Atlus released the expanded Persona 5 Royal in 2019, and it reached Xbox One and Series X|S in October 2022. You live a school year in Tokyo as a student who by night infiltrates twisted palaces and steals the corrupt desires of adults. Its combination of calendar management, social links and stylish turn-based combat is hugely addictive, and the jazz-tinged soundtrack is memorable. It takes well over 100 hours, and the first hours are slow and heavy on dialogue, so impatient players may drift away.

5. Elden Ring#

FromSoftware released Elden Ring in February 2022 on Xbox One and Series X|S, with world-building created together with author George R.R. Martin. The Lands Between can be explored freely on horseback, and you decide which dangerous areas to tackle, which bosses to skip and how to build your character. Discovery is the main reward. It is a hard game that never explains much, and some of its late bosses are brutal, so anyone wanting a guided experience should look elsewhere. It runs best on Series X|S.

6. Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition#

Larian Studios brought the Definitive Edition of Divinity: Original Sin II to Xbox One in August 2018 with a reworked interface and added voice work. It is a turn-based, party-driven role-playing game famous for its freedom: you can combine environmental effects, steal, charm or simply kill almost anyone. Four-player co-op is a highlight. Combat is tactical and demanding, and the final act is weaker than what came before it. Controller menus take time to learn, but the reward for patience is large.

7. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II#

Warhorse Studios released Kingdom Come: Deliverance II in February 2025, continuing the story of the blacksmith's son Henry in medieval Bohemia. It is a grounded, realistic role-playing game with no magic, where sword fighting, reputation, hunger and sleep matter. The open world is beautiful and your choices reshape quests. It is demanding for new players, combat has a steep learning curve, and the game can be buggy in places. Series X|S only, it rewards patient players with one of the most authentic historical worlds in the genre.

8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - Special Edition#

Bethesda Game Studios released the original Skyrim in 2011, and the Special Edition reached Xbox One in October 2016 with improved visuals and mod support. You play the Dragonborn in a snowy northern province, free to join guilds, slay dragons or simply wander. Mods on Xbox extend it almost endlessly. Combat and animation feel dated, and bugs are part of the charm, but few games match the simple joy of following a distant mountain and finding something unexpected.

9. Disco Elysium: The Final Cut#

ZA/UM's Disco Elysium: The Final Cut brought the acclaimed detective role-playing game to Xbox with full voice acting and new political content. You play an amnesiac police detective investigating a murder in the city of Revachol, and your own skills speak in your head like characters. There is no combat in the traditional sense, only conversation and dice-based checks. It is brilliantly written and often darkly funny. It is also a lot of reading, so anyone wanting action should skip it.

10. Yakuza: Like a Dragon#

RGG Studio's Yakuza: Like a Dragon reached Xbox in November 2020 and marked a change for the series, swapping brawling for a turn-based, job-based system. You play Ichiban Kasuga, a low-ranking yakuza who wakes up after 18 years in prison and starts over in Yokohama. The humor, heartfelt party and side activities make it unusually warm. Difficulty spikes can force you to grind for levels, and fans of the older brawlers may miss the old action.

11. Dark Souls III#

FromSoftware released Dark Souls III on Xbox One in April 2016 as the final major chapter of the series. You travel through ruined, interconnected kingdoms, fighting demanding bosses in a tense, methodical combat system. It is faster and more fluid than earlier entries, and the level design is some of the most atmospheric in the genre. It is punishing and leans heavily on nostalgia for the earlier games, so newcomers may prefer Elden Ring. It remains a superb entry point for action role-playing fans.

12. NieR: Automata#

NieR: Automata reached Xbox One in 2018, directed by Yoko Taro with combat by PlatinumGames. You control android 2B and her companions in a machine-ruled world, blending fast hack-and-slash action with bullet-hell sections and philosophical storytelling. You must finish the game multiple times to see the whole story, and each route recontextualizes what came before. The soundtrack is exceptional. The first playthrough can feel repetitive, and the visuals are dated, but the emotional payoff is unlike almost anything else.

13. Black Myth: Wukong#

Game Science's Black Myth: Wukong launched on PC and PlayStation in August 2024 and reached Xbox Series X|S in August 2025. Based on Journey to the West, it puts you in the role of the Destined One, fighting stylized bosses with a staff, transformations and magic. The visuals and boss designs are superb. It is linear and boss-heavy compared with open-world peers, and the story is easier to follow with some knowledge of the source legend. Series X|S only.

14. Undertale#

Toby Fox released Undertale in September 2015, and it later came to Xbox One. You guide a child through an underground world of monsters, where every fight can be resolved without violence if you choose. Its turn-based battles turn into small bullet-dodging puzzles, and its humor and music make it a modern cult classic. Graphics are intentionally simple, and the experience is short compared with other picks. It is best when you know as little as possible before you start.

Xbox One or Series X|S?

If you still play on an Xbox One, ten of these 14 RPGs are for you: The Witcher 3, Persona 5 Royal, Elden Ring, Divinity: Original Sin II, Skyrim, Disco Elysium, Yakuza: Like a Dragon, Dark Souls III, NieR: Automata and Undertale. Four are Series X|S only: Baldur's Gate III, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and Black Myth: Wukong. If you have a Series X|S, every game on this list is open to you, and several (Elden Ring, The Witcher 3, Skyrim) run noticeably better there.
