Xbox is a natural home for fantasy, from the sprawling Western role-playing games that defined the genre to Japanese-inspired action adventures and handmade indie worlds. Series X|S and Xbox One players can ride through open-world kingdoms, roll dice in turn-based party adventures or fight mythical bosses in tight action games. The best of them are built on strong worlds, memorable characters and mechanics that make magic and monsters feel meaningful.

1. Baldur's Gate III#

Larian Studios released Baldur's Gate III on Xbox Series X|S in December 2023, bringing its Dungeons & Dragons adventure to console after the PC launch. It is a turn-based role-playing game where choices, dice rolls and party banter shape a huge story across the Forgotten Realms. Reactivity is astonishing, and the Xbox version supports split-screen co-op. It is a dense, long game with a steep learning curve in its rules, and it is not playable on Xbox One. Anyone who wants a real tabletop feeling should start here.

2. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt#

CD Projekt Red released The Witcher 3 in May 2015, and it remains a benchmark for open-world fantasy. You play Geralt of Rivia, a monster hunter searching for his adopted daughter across war-torn kingdoms, in quests that are written with unusual care and consequences. The Blood and Wine expansion is a highlight. Combat is serviceable rather than great, and movement can feel stiff. It plays on both Xbox One and Series X|S, with an improved version on the newer hardware, and its sheer amount of quality content is hard to match.

3. Elden Ring#

FromSoftware's Elden Ring arrived in February 2022 with a world and lore developed together with author George R. R. Martin. It turns the studio's punishing combat into an open world, where you ride across the Lands Between and choose which castles, caves and legendary bosses to tackle first. Its sense of discovery is unmatched. The difficulty can be brutal, and some bosses may feel unfair without summoned help. The Shadow of the Erdtree expansion extends it further, and it is a superb pick for players who want fantasy that respects their time and curiosity.

4. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33#

Sandfall Interactive released Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 in April 2025, and it quickly became one of the most acclaimed role-playing games of its year. A painter's curse erases everyone of a certain age each year, and a doomed expedition sets out to stop her. Its Belle Epoque-inspired fantasy is gorgeous, and turn-based combat is enlivened by real-time dodging and parrying. Exploration is more linear than some expect, and the story leans heavily on melodrama. It is available on Xbox Series X|S, and it is a fresh, emotional fantasy adventure.

5. Hades#

Supergiant Games' Hades is a roguelike where you play Zagreus, prince of the Underworld, fighting upward through Greek myth to escape his father. Each failed run advances the story, and a stylish cast of gods and monsters makes every attempt feel fresh. Combat is fast and readable, with a wide range of weapons and boons that change how you play. It is an action game rather than an open-world epic, and the repetition of runs may not suit everyone. On Xbox it is a polished, endlessly replayable gem.

6. Ori and the Will of the Wisps#

Moon Studios released Ori and the Will of the Wisps in March 2020, following its predecessor Ori and the Blind Forest. It is a hand-painted platform adventure about a small forest spirit and an orphaned owlet, filled with light, music and lush environments. Movement is fluid and the combat is richer than in the first game. The story is emotional, though sometimes very simple, and the boss chases can be unforgiving. It runs beautifully on Series X|S and suits players who want beauty and heart as much as challenge.

7. Hollow Knight#

Team Cherry's Hollow Knight is a hand-drawn action adventure set in Hallownest, a ruined underground kingdom of insects and bugs. You explore a vast, interconnected map, collect charms to customize your knight and face tough bosses. Its melancholy atmosphere and soundtrack are outstanding, and its sheer volume of content is impressive. It gives little guidance, so players can easily get lost, and some late-game challenges are demanding. It is on Xbox One and playable on Series X|S, and it is a must for those who enjoy exploration.

8. Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition#

Larian Studios' Divinity: Original Sin II offers a turn-based role-playing game of incredible freedom. You play a Source-wielding prisoner in a world of elves, undead and gods, and the combat rewards clever use of environments and elements. Its story and party dynamics are top notch, and co-op with a friend is a joy. It has a lot of systems to learn, and its menus and inventory management can be fiddly on a controller. It is available on Xbox in its Definitive Edition and remains a rich, deep choice.

9. Black Myth: Wukong#

Game Science released Black Myth: Wukong in August 2024, and its Xbox Series X|S version arrived on August 20, 2025. It is an action role-playing game inspired by Journey to the West, where you play the Destined One, battling monsters and gods with a staff and transformation spells. The visuals are lavish and the bosses are spectacular. The structure is more linear than the marketing suggests, and some of the difficulty spikes and camera issues can frustrate. It is a strong pick for fans of mythic, action-heavy fantasy.

10. Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice#

FromSoftware released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice in March 2019, setting a dark-fantasy story in a twisted version of Sengoku-era Japan. You play a shinobi with a prosthetic arm, using stealth, grappling and a posture-based sword duel system rather than the usual build-your-character approach. Fights are tense and rhythmic, and the world is full of demons and monks. It has no co-op and no character classes, and the challenge can be steep for newcomers. It is available on Xbox One and is great for players who enjoy mastering combat.

11. Cassette Beasts#

Bytten Studio's Cassette Beasts, released on PC in April 2023 and on Xbox in May 2023, is a monster-collecting role-playing game set on the strange island of New Wood. You transform into creatures recorded on cassette tapes, and you can fuse two monsters to create new forms. The turn-based combat rewards experimenting with type matchups, and the story and characters are charming, with a soundtrack to match. It also supports local and online co-op. Some battles can drag late in the game, and its visuals are simple. It is a lovely choice for fans of monster-taming fantasy.

12. Planescape: Torment - Enhanced Edition#

Black Isle Studios' Planescape: Torment first appeared in 1999 and the Enhanced Edition brought it to Xbox One. You play the Nameless One, an amnesiac immortal exploring the strange city of Sigil, in a game that values dialogue and philosophy over combat. Its writing is regarded as among the best in the genre. It is text-heavy, the combat is weak and the isometric interface feels dated. It is for patient players who want a fantasy story unlike any other, and a classic worth discovering.

13. Wildermyth#

Worldwalker Games' Wildermyth is a tactical role-playing game with a storybook look, where procedurally generated heroes grow, fall in love, lose limbs and become legends over a campaign. Its papercraft art and narrative events make every playthrough feel unique, and the turn-based battles are accessible. It is easy to learn. The fights can become repetitive over a long campaign, and its visuals are deliberately simple. It is available on Xbox One and Series X|S (released there in October 2024) and is ideal for those who like stories that come from play.

14. Undertale#

Toby Fox's Undertale, released on PC in 2015, came to Xbox in March 2021. You play a human child who falls into the Underground, a world of monsters, and every encounter can be resolved by fighting or by sparing your opponents. Its humor, music and surprising structure have earned a devoted following. The combat is simple, and its retro visuals are intentionally basic, which may not appeal to everyone. It is short, and the experience depends on going in without spoilers, making it an unforgettable fantasy on Xbox.

15. Slay the Spire#

MegaCrit's Slay the Spire blends deck-building with roguelike dungeon crawling as you climb a cursed tower, choosing paths and building a deck to defeat bosses. The fantasy is light on story, but its monsters, relics and four distinct classes provide endless variety. Every run is different, and the decisions are satisfying. It is difficult and repetitive by design, and players who want a narrative should look elsewhere. It is on Xbox One and playable on Series X|S, and it is a superb pick for strategy fans who want a fantasy flavor.
